Discovering Hidden Literary Gems Beyond Book Covers

By

It is said that 80% of people judge a book by it’s cover. I’m an avid reader. On average I read about 50-100 books a year. It varies depending on how much I’m writing for myself.

When I’m deciding on a book, the cover plays a role. I’ll admit. The author also plays a strong role. I read a lot of Theodora Taylor. I love her writing style. Her characters are too much and not enough at the same time. She could use a black and white cover with the title and her name. I’d probably read it. Same for Ms. Tiffany Patterson.

Where am I going with this?

If we continue to judge books by just their covers, jewels will go undiscovered.

I have a story!!

You’ll learn that I always have a story.

I was browsing through the book section of the commissary. I found a discount books bend. In that bend I saw a book for $2.50. The cover did not instantly draw my attention. I purchased the book because it was $2.50 for a hard cover!!! Who wouldn’t have purchased it to add to their collection.

One day, I decided to read my cheap buy. I was floored by the book. It was moved me. It became one of my favorite books.

As a new author, I struggled with designing a book cover that appeals to everyone.

This was my first cover. I thought it was cute but I was advised that it was too simple and wouldn’t attract many readers.

Public opinion of this cover said that it screamed new author. “Safe” described the cover by beta readers. I liked the cover because She’s sleep and maybe dreaming. It was simple. I believe that simplicity can’t always be a bad thing

My second and published cover:

What do you think? Would you pick up this book if you saw it on the shelf? Would you read it if it was part of your Kindle Unlimited suggestions?

As a reader and now newly published author, I have a suggestion. Read the book’s summary to decide if it is worth your time. Go as far as to read other readers reviews to help you decide. If you are in a physical bookstore, read the first few pages. Then decide.

Authors put a lot of time, energy and imagination into creating the whole book. Don’t allow the cover to deter you from finding a true work of the imagination. #IJS
